Universiti Utara Malaysia Facilities, The UUM campus is fully equipped with modern facilities and amenities, including well-equipped and fully air-conditioned halls and classrooms, student lounge and a 24 hours wireless internet facility. The main buildings in the campus are the academic buildings, the library, the administrative buildings, the University Health Centre, the Varsity Mall and the sports complex.
Sporting and Leaisure Facilities
The university provides several facilities for sports and recreational activities for all students and staff as a part of the objective to develop a physically and mentally healthy community. In its quest to develop well-rounded individuals, the University has an extensive array of sports and recreational facilities, which include an Olympic-size swimming pool, a mini-stadium with a state-of-the-art running track, an archery range, shooting range, badminton, tennis, basketball, volleyball, rugby, hockey, softball, handball and netball courts as well as football fields. UUM is the only university in Malaysia that has a go-kart circuit and provides recreational facilities for canoeing, jogging, cycling, jungle trekking, climbing, abseiling and camping. The University Health Centre provides a comprehensive health service that covers medical and dental treatment, counseling, first aid, surgery, and medication for students and staff. Other facilities and services include a computerized hematology laboratory, an imaging and diagnostic laboratory, and also pediatric and antenatal clinical services. All international students are advised to obtain comprehensive health insurance coverage. The Universiy’s Health Centre has SIX full time qualified medical doctor, THREE dentist, and more than 30 supports staffs such as farmacist assistants, medical assistants, and nurses.

As a fully residential university, Universiti Utara Malaysia provides accommodation for almost 20,000 of its students in 15 residential halls. This includes a residential hall for married students. Each residential hall has its own facilities for students. There are common rooms, a cafeteria, laundry facilities, shops, and recreational and sports facilities. For undergraduate students are guaranteed a place in one of the residential halls. Accommodation for postgraduate students are on a ‘first come, first serve basis’. Each of the residential halls is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities including common rooms, a cafeteria, laundry facilities, shops, a recreation center, and sports facilities. It is also common for postgraduate students who have accompanying family members in Malaysia to rent houses near to UUM Campus.
24/7 internet access in every university offices, academic buildings, student’s residencial halls, and almost 70% of campus area provided with WIFI connections. Currently the IT facilities are:

The Sultanah Bahiyah Library is a fully automated library as it has an integrated library system known as LINTAS (Library Information Technology Automated System). This IS0 9001:9002 Certified Library utilises a fully computerised system and hosts a large collection of books that includes audio-visual facilities, journals, as well as an extensive series of publications that is primarily concerned with management. The library has 2,972,126 items in its collections, including 352,846 volumes of printed materials, 626,587 AV materials, and 979,433 items in electronic or digitized forms. The library currently subscribes to 46,927 titles from electronic journals. The library is housed in a five-storey building situated in the heart of the campus and had obtained the MS ISO 9002 in 1997 then has now obtained the MS ISO 9001:2000. The In-house Digital Collections [IHDC] has been created to digitally capture and provide electronic access to the Sultanah Bahiyah Library and the Universiti Utara Malaysia special collections via the World Wide Web using advanced digital technologies. As Islam is the official religion of Malaysia, Universiti Utara Malaysia has two mosques for the benefit of its Muslim community. The Sultan Badlishah Mosque functions as an Islamic educational and advisory center that organizes Fardu Ain and Arabic Language classes. The second mosque is the Bukit Kachi Mosque that is built in the middle of Bank Rakyat and SME Bank Halls of Residence. Other religous facilities are outside the campus which can be reached very near to the campus in Changlun or Jitra such as Churches, Buddhist Temples, Siammese Temples and etc.
International Office- The Centre for International Affairs and Cooperation (CIAC)
The CIAC has been given the mandate to foster, nurture, and maintain international relations for UUM. Based on this mandate, the CIAC maintains a passion for international relations and engages in global outreach in recognition of an increasingly borderless world and a seamless higher education market. The services offerred:
- Assisting the Immigration office in preparing students’ passes and also social passes for their family members.
- Assisting the Immigration office in preparing work permits for international staff.
- Advising international students on matters of importance to them.
- Coordinating international visits to UUM.
- Coordinating international promotions for UUM.
UUM Language Centre focuses on providing students English and Malay language courses to help international students learn the local language as well as improve their English language skills.
Counselling Centre & Services
The counseling center provides counseling services to help students cope with stress related to their study life in the University. It also offers personality and self-potential workshops, effective learning workshops, and other training and self-improvement programs to aid students at every step of their academic experience at UUM. The Counselling and Career Centre supports the academic, personal, and interpersonal development of Universiti Utara Malaysia students by providing short-term individual and group counselling, psychological assessment, consultation for faculty, staff, parents, students, and also educational programs to the campus community. Issues of stress, crisis and conflicts, personal problems related to studies or campus life may be addressed to the counselling center. In consistent with the academic mission of the University, the center serves as a training site for graduate students in psychology and counselling by encouraging and giving supports scholarly activity together with professional development of staff. Our services offer you a safe atmosphere where personal concerns can be openly explored and discussed with a professional counselor based on The Counsellors Act 1998 (Act 580).
Most of the modern-day facilities are located centrally at the Varsity Mall. These facilities include banking facilities (BSN, and BIMB), a local Post Office, a Cooperative Bookshop, and a restaurant, which can accommodate up to 350 people at a time. The mall also has a mini- market that supplies stationary, toiletries, groceries and other goods at affordable prices. Located within the mall premises are 40 shop-lots with a variety of businesses ranging from cyber-centers, hair salons, computer and telecommunication sales and service shops to photocopy service centers. The Varsity Mall is the hub, which houses all the basic amenities. Both for its facilities and the services it provides, the Varsity Mall has become an integral and important part of the UUM campus experience.
Restaurants and Cafe
At UUM, you will find the food paradise Malaysia is synonymous with, in the variety of stalls, cafes and restaurants on campus. This, in essence, reflects the true spirit of harmonious communal living in the larger society. For more stylish dining, the Seri Beringin Restaurant at the EDC-UUM Hotel serves a variety of local, western and authentic Asian cuisines for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It also serves daily sumptuous buffets and a wide range of ala carte local dishes. Another café, also owned by EDC-UUM, called the Academia Lounge, is located on campus in the building that houses the College of Business (COB). It began operations in January 2012 and the sale of food and drinks at Academia Lounge is available only to staff and university guests. Academia Lounge has a seating capacity of 120 pax and operates daily from 8.00 am to 5.00 pm except on Fridays and public holidays.
Culture and Arts Centre
The purpose of the centre is to coordinate all arts and cultural activities by or for students that may take place either on or off the campus. The activities could include dance, music performance, theater, literature appreciatiom, drawing arts, event management and technical aspect of those aspects.
Student’s Helpdesk One Stop-Centre (U-Assist)
The U-Assist is known as one stop centre established in Universiti Utara Malaysia under the Department of Student Affairs and Alumni, located at Level 1, Student Affairs Department. The centre aims to improve the quality of services for students and to reduce bureaucracy. In addition, it facilitates the delivery of information to the students. The over-the-counter services are also available to cater the students’ academicand financialneeds, scholarships and others. In fact, most of the services required are offered at one location. The “One Stop Centre” offers services to be handled by all Centre and Units under the Student Affairs and Alumni Department, Academic Affairs Department, Schoolsand several other departments including the Student Accommodation Centre, Computer Centre, Security Department and Bursar’s Department.
