Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) was established on 10 January 1997 and is the number 1 private university in Malaysia.
UTP offers a wide range of industry-relevant engineering, science and technology programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and aims to produce well-rounded graduates with excellent leadership qualities and communication abilities.
UTP has produced more than 15,000 graduates and currently has an enrolment of over 1,200 foundation students, 6,000 undergraduates and 1,200 postgraduates from more than 66 countries around the world.
The university has attained numerous prestigious national and international recognitions in only two decades of its establishment.
UTP is the first and only private university in Malaysia to be rated a maximum 5-star overall rating in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) StarsTM University Rating System.
Furthermore, UTP retains its position in the 601 – 650 band in the QS World University Rankings 2018, the only private university to make it into the rankings.
UTP has improved its standing in the QS Asia University Rankings 2017, moving up 26 places and is now ranked Top 101.
UTP has also made its first appearance in the QS Top 50 under 50 2017 and is ranked in the 91-100 band.  The ranking is based on the world’s best universities that are less than 50 years old.
UTP is also ranked 233rd in the QS World University Rankings 2017 by Faculty for its Engineering and Technology Faculty.
UTP has improved its standing in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2017.  Chemical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering have maintained their position as Top 150 and Top 200 respectively.   Meanwhile, Electrical Engineering has improved its rank to be in the Top 200 and Computer Sciences & Information Systems has managed to place itself in the Top 300.
Apart from the QS rankings, UTP has made the list in The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2016-2017 for the first time and is ranked in the 601-800 band.
UTP has also made its debut in the prestigious THE BRICS & Emerging Economies Rankings 2017, coming in at 91st.  This placed UTP among the top 100 best research-led universities in the developing world.
In addition, UTP has made its maiden entrance into the THE Asia University Rankings 2017 and is ranked between 141 – 150.  It has also debuted in the THE Young University Rankings 2017 and is ranked between 151 – 200.  It is also ranked at 131-140 in the newly introduced THE Asia-Pacific University Rankings 2017.
The university conducts extensive research activities in collaboration with PETRONAS and other institutions and industries, locally and abroad, on six research focus and niche areas.  They are sustainable living, transport infrastructure, health analytics, hydrocarbon recovery, contaminant management and autonomous system.
UTP is the first and only private university to be awarded a six-star rating (the highest performance level) by Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia for its research, development and commercialisation efforts under the Malaysia Research Assessment Rating System (MyRA).
UTP continues to provide distinctive educational opportunities to its students with the rating of Six Star or outstanding status in the Rating System for Malaysian Higher Education 2017 (SETARA).

Students will apply in-depth technical knowledge for problem identification, interpretation, evaluation and system performance improvement of a plant operation.

Civil Engineering is a people-serving profession that involves the application of engineering principles and applied sciences to the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of capital projects in a typical asset life cycle.  This includes buildings, roads, bridges, dams, airports, water and wastewater treatment plants, oil and gas production facilities, special purpose structures and any engineered structures for the comfort of mankind.

Students are exposed to courses in computer aided design, surveying, transportation engineering, environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, pavement and materials engineering, construction and project management, steel and concrete design, water and wastewater engineering.

  • Electrical and Electronics

The programme is to prepare students for the petroleum industry particularly in dealing with drilling, production, reservoir engineering and transportation of oil gas and other subsurface resources. Upon completion, the student will be equipped with the knowledge on the exploration and production activities of petroleum at the upstream end of the energy sector.

  • Petroleum Geoscience

This programme has been designed to provide students with a strong understanding of geology and geophysics that relate to petroleum discovery, exploration and production.

It emphasises on quantitative geosciences, requiring strong fundamentals in mathematics and physics, followed by a thorough coverage of basic geology courses such as Physical Geology, Minerology and Petrology, Structural Geology, Stratigraphy and Palaeontology, and Geological Field Mapping.  At higher levels, students are exposed to more petroleum geoscience related courses such as Clastic and Carbonate Sedimentology, Geochemistry, Seismic Acquisition and Processing, Seismic Interpretation, Formation Evaluation, and Seismic Imaging.

In the final year, students have the opportunity to major in one of these two selected areas of interest:

    • Basin and Reservoir Studies
    • Exploration Geophysics

Students acquire the ability to communicate with a diverse array of people and will have an understanding of the geological and technological complexity of the petroleum systems with which they are working. Student may opt for a Minor in Management, an option made available to students who are interested to enhance their knowledge in management and business, at their discretion.

  • Business Information Systems

Students will gain extensive knowledge and experience in business management systems analysis and design methods, as well as database management systems and commercial applications with opportunities to specialise in e-business and knowledge management. Throughout the programme, there is also emphasis on ways to control and manage appropriate software in order to support business decision-making and to communicate effectively in commercial and business environments.

Students are further equipped with relevant business management tools to take on the challenges of global via the minor electives in financial management or corporate management.

  • Information and Communication Technology

This programme provides students with fundamental knowledge and practical skills of computer technologies especially in programming, multimedia, network and software engineering. Throughout the programme there is also emphasis on how students could blend their technical expertise with management know-how in order to support business decision-making and to communicate effectively in commercial and business environment.

In later years of study, students will have the opportunity to major in either Multimedia Technology or Software Engineering.

The 3.5-year programme is also enriched with the offer of a 7-month Industrial Internship Training for all students either locally or internationally.

This program will address the nation's call to produce more scientists and technologists in our move towards high income society.  DFAS faculty members comprised of qualified and experienced teaching staffs with background in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics to nurture the students into becoming competent and innovative graduates. Career opportunities for graduates are enormous from the industries, government, academia and R&D sectors. These include Analytical Chemists, Computational Chemists, Quality Control Chemists, Process Engineers and Research Scientists, to name a few.

 

  • Applied Physics

This programme is developed to produce skilled knowledge workers to meet the industry's need especially in the areas of Nanotechnology, Renewable Energy and Oil & Gas Exploration. The 3.5-year programme is also enriched with the offer of a 7-month Industrial Internship Training for all students either locally or internationally.

This program will address the nation's call to produce more scientists and technologists in our move towards high income society.  DFAS faculty members comprised of qualified and experienced teaching staffs with background in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics to nurture the students into becoming competent and innovative graduates. Career opportunities for graduates are enormous from the industries, government, academia and R&D sectors. These include Geophysicist, Product Scientists, Quality Control Physicist, Process Engineers and Research Scientists, to name a few.

 

Postgraduate Programme  

The University provides excellent research facilities and services for postgraduate students. This includes an experienced pool of academic not only from UTP, but also visiting lecturers from UTP partners and industry experts. In addition, students have access to industry data and practices for project work; they are also able to utilise latest sofware tools and simulation packages currently used by industry.

Students will also benefit from studying in a dynamic research environment where the university's Mission Oriented Research (MORs) in nine thematic areas encourages interdisciplinary and translationary research work to flourish within the campus. These nine thematic areas are Enhanced Oil Recovery, CO2 Management, Deepwater Technology, Nanotechnology, Green Technology, Biomedical Technology, Hybrid Energy Systems, Intelligent City and Sustainable Resources.

Joint postgraduate programmes are offered, providing opportunities for research to be conducted at different universities and industry locations worldwide. UTP has partnerships with internationally renowned universities such as the University of Manchester and Herriot-Watt University in the United Kingdom, Lehigh University, U.S.A. as well as the institut Francais du Petrole (IFP) and Univesity of Burgundy, France. The University also has collaborations with many global industry giants including Shell, Schlumberger, Mitsubishi, Technip, Baker Hughes, Halliburton, Hitachi as well as Intel and locally with organisations such as MIMOS Berhad, Muhibbah Engineering and PETRONAS subsidiaries.

Our Postgraduate programmes have been acknowledged internationally and the university has admitted postgraduate students from various parts of the world, who are sponsored by governments, organisations and industries.
