Universiti Teknologi Mara Kampus Tawau, Tawau (Malaysian pronunciation: formerly known as Tawao, is the capital of the Tawau District in Sabah, Malaysia. It is the third-largest town in Sabah, after Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan. It is located on the south east coast of the state in the administrative centre of Tawau Division which bordered by the Sulu Sea to the east, the Celebes Sea to the south at Cowie Bay and shares a border with North Kalimantan. The town had an estimated population as of 2010 of 113,809, while the whole municipality area had a population of 397,673.
UiTM Kampus Tawau commenced its operation in December 1996 and was officiated by Yang Berhormat Datuk Seri Mohd. Najib Bin Tun Razak on 10 June 1997. In conjunction with the opening ceremony UiTM Kampus Tawau was declared a City Campus in terms of its operations. To date, UiTM Kampus Tawau is a “Feeder Campus” for diploma courses offered by UiTM throughout Malaysia, especially UiTM Sabah Branch Campus Kota Kinabalu.
At the beginning of its establishment until the end of 1996, UiTM Kampus Tawau was operating at MAA Building, Jalan Bunga Raya, Tawau. In 1997 UiTM Kampus Tawau has moved and operated at Hup Foh Building, New Town, Tawau New Road.
The campus is still located at Batu 26, Jalan Apas, Balung, Tawau. Base stone placement was completed by Y.B. Dato ‘Sri Mohd. Najib Tun Abdul Razak (then Education Minister) in 1999. However, the construction of the Tawau Campus in Balung was only commenced in March 2009 and was completed in October 2011.
