UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMMES

The School of Educational Studies (SES) offer the following undergraduate academic programmes:

Bachelor of Education (Science/Arts) with Honours [B. Ed. (Hons)]

The B. Ed. (Hons) degree is a four-year liberal education programme designed specifically for in-service teachers and education officers who wish to further advance themselves professionally and academically.
Besides providing for professional training in education the programme also allows the students to specialize in an academic discipline which qualifies them to teach at the Sixth Form level in school.  At the same time, opportunity is also given for them to choose options from other disciplines as their minor interest to further widen their exposure and experience of a more liberal education

Bachelor of Arts (Education) with Honours [B. A. (Ed.) (Hons.)]

This programme consists of two components–an academic component offered by the School of Humanities and/or the School of Management and/or the School of Social Science and a professional component offered by the School of Educational Studies.  Students are required to major in a single school subject and minor in another subject relevant to the secondary school curriculum.
Subjects offered by those Schools for the major-minor specialization include Malay Language, English Language, Geography, Literature, History, Economics, Accounting and business-related subjects.

Bachelor of Science (Education) with Honours [B. Sc. (Ed.) Hons.)]

The Bachelor of Science (Education) with Honours degree programme is a four-year professional  programme designed to produce teachers of science subjects at the secondary school level.  These teachers will be able to teach at least two science subjects.
The academic component is offered by the School of Biological Sciences, School of Chemical Sciences, and School of Computer Sciences whereas the educational component is offered by the School of Educational Studies.  The students will major in one of the four science disciplines–Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and minor in another subject from the above.

Bachelor of Education [Preschool] with Honours

The Bachelor of Education (Preschool) with Honours degree programme is a four-year professional programme designed to produce teachers who will be proficient in teaching preschoolers. This programme was introduced in 2003.

Bachelor of Education [Special Education] with Honours

The Bachelor of Education (Special Education) with Honours degree programme is a four-year professional programme designed to produce teachers who will be proficient in teaching students with disabilities. The course will cover three disability areas- learning disabilities, visual impairment and hearing impairment.

Bachelor of Education [TESOL] with Honours
The Bachelor of Education (TESOL) with Honours degree programme is a four-year professional programme aimed at producing English teachers to teach English as a Second Language in Malaysian secondary schools. In this programme, the professional and pedagogical components are under the School of Educational Studies while the subject-matter component is under the School of Humanities.  The students take multimedia courses as their minor.  These are offered by the Centre for Instructional Technology and Multimedia.

Graduate Diploma in Education

Doctor of Education (Ed.D.)
The Doctor of Education (Ed.D) Degree Programme provides practitioners in the field of education, particularly university or college lecturers, teacher educators, curriculum developers, personnel in human resource training, officers from the Ministry of Education, counsellors, as well as education psychologist, and others in the field of education an opportunity to continue their studies by taking courses relevant to their needs and interests, in order to enhance their research capabilities and promote high inquisitive skills; whilst simultaneously providing a holistic knowledge of professionalism in various fields in education at the doctoral level.This programme aims at upgrading the professional development of educators in specialized areas and providing graduate students in-depth knowledge in specific areas through quality courses, exposure to relevant educational issues, and intellectual discourses.

Apart from exposure to some fundamental courses on educational research skills and methodologies, students will also select courses from a field of specialization in education for in-depth study, including courses requiring internship in relevant educational institutions or research centers and/or independent study.

Programme structure
There are two major components in the programme:

Coursework (60 units)
Dissertation (30 units)

Coursework Component
1.  Major/Specialization Courses (28 units)
Candidates have to major in one area of specialization from the following:

  • Science Education
  • Educational Technology
  • Curriculum and Instruction
  • TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)

2.  Cognate or Substantive Courses (20 units)
Candidates are required to select courses from the M.Ed. or Ed.D. level offered by the School of Educational Studies or other Schools that can support or enhance the scope and depth of the candidate’s major.

3.  Research Methodology and Statistical Analysis Courses (12 units)
This component aims to enable the candidate to master the process of educational research. The courses deal with various research methods that enable the student to learn research skills, data processing techniques, statistical analysis and the use of computers in data analysis.

Dissertation Component
Candidates are required to select a research topic and carry out an intensive research study under the supervision of a lecturer/supervisor and members of the Dissertation Committee. The length of the dissertation should be between 37,500 and 50,000 words.

Comprehensive Examination
This is an assessment of a candidate’s comprehensive knowledge to synthesize ideas or theories derived from lectures attended. A candidate must pass this examination before proceeding to the Dissertation Component.

Admission Requirements

  • Recognised Bachelor Degree, preferably Second Class Upper (or minimum CGPA 2.75)
  • Recognised Master of Education Degree or a masters degree in a related filed (minimum CGPA 3.00)
  • At least two years of teaching experience or other experience related to education

Duration

Full-time  :  Minimum 36 months / Maximum 60 months
Part-time :  Minimum 48 months / Maximum 84 months

Master of Education (M.Ed.) by coursework
The Master of Education (M.Ed.) by Coursework Degree Programme is a postgraduate professional training programme that aims to enhance the professional development of personnel in the field of education, particularly teachers, teacher educators, curriculum developers and educational administrators, especially those who are involved in human resource development in the educational services, in public and private educational institutions.Candidates of this programme can opt to study on a part-time or full-time basis.

Programme structure
There are two major components in the programme:

Research (8 units)

Coursework Component
1.  Specialization Courses (8 – 16 units)
Candidates have to major in one educational field. The areas of specialisation currently being offered are:

  • Curriculum Studies

  • Guidance and Counselling

2.  Knowledge Development Courses (8 – 16 units)
These courses are intended to extend the candidates’ understanding on the aspects related to the educational system, its role and function in society and in the country’s development, educational issues, policies and management, important theories linked to the curriculum, teaching and learning, effective schooling as well as the processes of teacher training in education.

3.  Research Methodology Courses (8 units)
These courses are offered to broaden the knowledge base of candidates on the aspects of research, statistical reasoning as well as expertise to do research in education.

Research Component
Each candidate is required to conduct a mini research project or a practicum (for Guidance and Counselling candidates only) in his/her area of specialisation. For the practicum, candidates are required to undergo an internship in relevant educational institutions which offer Guidance and Counselling services and conduct a mini research.

Graduate Diploma in Education
The Graduate Diploma in Education is a programme conducted by the School of Educational Studies in order to prepare and train high quality secondary school teachers. The enrolments to this programme need to follow a stringent selection procedure organised and monitored by the Ministry of Higher Education as well as the Ministry of Education. Candidates need to sit for the Malaysian Educators Selection Inventory, MEdSI. After this aptitude test, candidates will be shortlisted for an interview. Only the best and highly qualified candidates are selected to enrol in this programme.

The Graduate Diploma in Education is a two-semester programme plus 12 weeks of teaching practicum. Student teachers will be evaluated based on their performance on each subject taken in each semester and also their teaching practicum. For the year 2009, 42 graduate diploma students majoring in the teaching of Chemistry and Science are now continuing their studies in this programme. Another 200 students are expected to be enrolled in the July 2009 intake.
