Universiti Malaysia Sarawak Faculty Of Medicine And Health Sciences
Universiti Malaysia Sarawak Faculty Of Medicine And Health Sciences, the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak started registering its pioneer batch of Medical students in 1995 followed by the students in the Nursing programme in 1998. The planners of the Faculty have put a strong emphasis on quality and the curriculum is comprehensive and is geared towards the total development of students and preparing them to be competent autonomous and yet able to contribute to teamwork.
The medical school will contribute to the advancement of health in the community and ensure the progress of the country via appropriate innovative curricular approaches, efficient health care services and relevant research work.
The curriculum emphasises Problem Based Learning (PBL), which aims at enhancing the students' acquisition of integrated knowledge, improving their problem solving skills as well as improving their abilities in clinical reasoning. The clinical exposure is done early and the students make use of facilities available at several government hospitals, clinics and including health centres.
The students' achievements are closely monitored so that on graduation they will be able to practise medicine in a manner that is competent, humane, ethical and cost effective.
The university plans to construct the permanent faculty building as well as our own teaching hospital close to the campus soon. This new medical complex would be able to attract high calibre academicians.
Medical education is changing globally in order to meet the expectations of the community with respect to health care. The Unimas medical school being new has adjusted itself to adopt innovative teaching-learning approaches, which can contribute significantly towards this direction.
The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) is committed to be an exemplary educational center, which will train human being, who will care for the health needs of the individual and the community and which will inspire them to do this with dedication and compassion and imbue them with the spirit of inquiry, integrity, creativity and courage.
Message from the Dean
Welcome undergraduate & postgraduate students, potential students, parents and the public, to the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS), UNIMAS web site. The faculty is situated close to Kuching city, the capital of Sarawak. We strive to provide our students and the public a succinct yet precise information regarding FMHS through this web site.
The faculty offers two undergraduate programmes and they are the medical and nursing programmes. Our educational paradigm is geared towards a student centered learning approach. The educational curriculum is very integrative and modular. The medical programme adheres to the organ-system approach and the nursing programme follows the semester system. Furthermore the medical programme has also adopted and adapted Problem Based Learning (PBL) methodology in its undergraduate medical curriculum. In Phase I of the undergraduate medical programme the students are extensively exposed to PBL based teaching.
At the postgraduate level FMHS provides both taught-courses degrees and full time/part time research degrees. Our staff are actively involved in four research niche areas and they are concerning malaria, cancer, infectious diseases and non communicable diseases. Various research projects under these niche areas are currently underway and many are on the pipeline. For further information please click on Research tab.
We hope that the information provided on our web pages are useful to you. Please contact us if you need further clarification. Your kind feedback will be appreciated.
