Mechanical Engineering is concerned with the design, development and manufacture of equipment and products. As a profession, it is intertwined with every aspect of manufacturing industry such as research and development, design, manufacture, testing, marketing and technological development.

The 4-year programme in Mechanical Engineering provides the student with the necessary skills in theory and application of machinery, thermodynamics, manufacturing, management, CAD, product design and related courses. A major input of the programme is the emphasis on laboratory and computer aided product design. Graduates of this programme find employment in manufacturing industry, marketing, consulting firms and mechanical and electrical engineering construction company. Courses that have been offered are: Introduction to Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Materials, Strength of Materials, Mechanics of Machines, Manufacturing Technology, Heat Transfer, Engineering Control and Operational Research.

 

CAREER PROSPECTS

Mechanical engineers are employed in almost every sector of industry including aerospace, automotive, oil and gas, semiconductor, medicine, engineering construction, food processing, building and construction, manufacturing, energy and power, education and plantations and processes.

 

Specific requirements conditions  :

A Diploma in Engineering / Science Diploma from institutions accredited by the Senate of Universiti Malaysia Sabah with a minimum CGPA of 3.00

and

A minimum of Honours ( Grade C ) at the SPM level in the following subjects :

Mathematics / Additional Mathematics

Physics

Chemistry

or

Obtained at least Grade B (CGPA 2.67 ) at STPM level in the following subjects :

Mathematics / Further Mathematics T

Physics

Chemistry

or

Obtained at least Grade B ( 2.67 ) at the Matriculation / Foundation level in the following subjects :

Mathematics

Physics / Engineering Physics

Chemistry / Engineering Chemistry

and

A minimum of Honours ( Grade C ) at the SPM level in the following subjects :

English or at least a Level 2 ( Band 2 ) in Malaysian Bahasa Inggeris Test ( MUET )

 

 

 

Faculty of Engineering Program Education Objectives (PEOs)

The Programme Education Objectives (PEOs) of the Faculty of Engineernig, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, has been STANDARDIZED into two PEOs, PEO1 and PEO2, for the five Engineering Programmes (Civil, Chemical, Computer, Electrical, and Mechanical) as described in the below.

PEO1: Professionalism

  1. Graduates of the programme should be able to attain professional recognition in their respective fields.

 

In the Mechanical Engineering Programme interpretation, “their respective fields” is translated as Mechanical Engineering or related fields.   The qualitative measurement criteria for this PEO are attained by demonstrating sample that:

  • Graduates should be a member of professional bodies related to Mechanical Engineering (BEM, IMM, IMECHE, etc.)OR
  • Graduates could be promoted to the executive/managerial level or higher in their engineering career.

PEO2: Continuous Professional Development

  1. Graduates of the programme should continuously develop their professional and contemporary knowledge.

The “professional and contemporary knowledge” is referred to any knowledge that is directly or indirectly beneficial to their Mechanical Engineering career development. The attainment of this PEO shall be measured by showing sample of the graduate initiatives:

  • Attend courses/seminar/workshop/conference/training that are relevant to their engineering career;  OR
  • Pursue specialization/training courses or certifications; OR
  • Pursue further studies (MSc/MEng/PhD/MBA etc.)

 

Mechanical Engineering Programme 12 POs

PO1: Engineering Knowledge

An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science and mechanical engineering principles in solving engineering problems.

PO2: Problem Analysis

An ability to identify core problems, research relevant literature, formulate suitable methodology and perform necessary theoretical analysis for wide and complex mechanical engineering problems.

PO3: Design/Development of Solutions 

An ability to design and develop systems, components, or processes that meet requirements or solve specified engineering problems within constraints and degree of complexities.

PO4: Investigation

An ability to design, conduct, analyse and interpret experimental investigation for unstructured mechanical engineering problems that yield to valid conclusions.

PO5: Modern Tool Usage

An ability to use appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.

PO6: The Engineer and Society

An ability to apply circumstantial information for assessment of safety and health, legal, cultural and societal issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to professional engineering practice.

PO7: Environment and Sustainability

An ability to provide knowledge-based assessment on the impact of engineering solutions in societal and environmental contexts and reasoning for the need for sustainable engineering solution.

PO8: Ethics

An ability to demonstrate awareness to professional ethics, responsibilities and norms of engineering practice and adhere to ethical principles.

PO9: Communication

An ability to comprehend and write reports and technical documentations as well as make effective presentations on complex engineering.

PO10: Individual and Team Work

An ability to work independently and participate effectively as a member or leader in diverse teams.

PO11: Life Long Learning

An ability to recognize the need for and engage in life-long learning in the context of technological change.

PO12: Project Management and Finance

An ability to apply management principles and financial knowledge that lead to completion of projects.
