Sejarah Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia

History of the National Defense University of Malaysia (UPNM) started with the establishment of the Malaysian Military Academy (ATMA) on 1 June 1995 as the organization responsible for conducting a Bachelor’s degree program and military training to the Malaysian Army Cadet Officers (ATMs). The role of ATMA was further expanded by making it as a UPNM gazetted on November 10, 2006.
Even though UPNM started taking its first batch of students in the 2007/2008 session, it has had the experience of conducting a Bachelor’s degree program for 11 years from 1995 to 2006 through a collaborative program between the Ministry of Defense Malaysia and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia where approximately as much as 1017 graduates have been issued in three fields covering Engineering, Science and Management. In addition to obtaining professional qualifications, all graduates have been commissioned as ATM Officers and they are serving in various units within the Army, the Royal Malaysian Navy, and the Royal Malaysian Air Force.
UPNM was established by the Malaysian Government on June 21, 2006 to issue military and civilian graduates for national defense purposes. The UPNM corporation order was issued on 6 November 2006 to begin academic studies of the 2007/2008 session. For 2007-2008 new student recruitment, 550 students reported for the Defense Foundation Program consisting of 121 civilians and 350 military students.
In the meantime, for a bachelor’s program of 130 students of public and 297 students of Defense Foundation will follow a bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Science and Technology as well as Management and Defense Studies. To start the 2007/2008 UPNM sessions have set up 3 faculties in addition to the Defense Foundation Center namely the Defense Engineering Faculty, the Defense Science and Technology Faculty and the Faculty of Management and Defense Studies.
The academic programs offered at the faculty are comparable to both public and private IPTAs. This program will be able to attract students as they provide a curriculum that embraces hands-on science and technology defense. Knowledge gained can be applied to national defense assets such as naval vessels, aircraft and military equipment in the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATMs). In addition, it can be applied in the industrial sector based on latest science and technology.
