Fellowship Universiti Malaysia Kelantan
Fellowship Universiti Malaysia Kelantan, A grant given by a university or foundation to a scholar for research or study is a fellowship. If you get a fellowship to do research on insects, it might bug your colleagues who didn’t get one.
Since 2007, postgraduate programmes by research mode, Short Term Research Grant Scheme (STRG) and Graduate Assistantship Scheme have been introduced in UMK. During that time, as a relatively young university, research and innovation was a challenging task for UMK due to inadequate human resources, facilities, space and funding. Trying to inculcate the culture of research among the academic workforce, especially junior academicians, was also a big challenge faced in the beginning years of UMK.
However, since research and development is one of its core businesses those heavy constraints did not hinder UMK from forging ahead. By integrating entrepreneurial elements and subscribing to the philosophy of “do more with less” and “business unusual”, UMK has worked hard to build a strong foundation in research and innovation (R&I) to ensure it becomes one of the University’s agenda for academic excellence.
From 2007 – 2015, the University has spared no effort in positioning itself in research and innovation, beginning with the process of developing research culture among academics to securing research grants, publication and creating intellectual properties. Even though the set strategic goals and deliverables (shown above) were achieved, the success, as it were, was far from satisfactory in terms of quality and quantity. Today and beyond, a lot more needs to be accomplished in order to stay competitive and remain relevant to our stakeholders.
Positioning Research and Innovation as a main agenda in UMK will be the way forward in meeting the KPIs that are centred on the 10 Shifts of the Malaysia Education Blueprint (Higher Education). In addition, the new direction of MOHE’s Performance Based Budget demands UMK to be more strategic, transformational and aggressive to ensure the set KPIs are achieved.
However, UMK will not be playing catch-up with other established Research Universities (RU) and instead, will play to its strength by leveraging on its entrepreneurship core to stand apart from the rest. While fundamental research is extremely important, research at UMK will be inclined towards the translation of research findings for commercialization purposes so as to ensure Research and Innovation can be a source of income generation for the University.
